I am a Research Officer working with Kenya Forestry Research Institute and I wish to be guided on how I can get the LEAP software and user guidelines so that I can attempt to develop a wood energy plan for Kenya.

Joseph,

You can downoad the software itself as well as the user manuals and training exercises from the LEAP web site (http://forums.seib.org/leap)

Click on the LEAP menu to access the downloads, user manual and training materials pages. Please also see the licensing page. Licenses are available at no charge to qualified organizations based in developing countries.

Please bear in mind that LEAP is designed as an integrated energy planning model: it may not be capable of everything you will need for developing a wood-energy plan.

However, in passing I will mention that the very first version of LEAP, way back in the early 1980s was developed for an integrated woodfuel planning study in...Kenya!

The current version of LEAP is very different from that tool, but some of the basic ideas (end-use oriented, demand-focusssed, integrated planning approaches) have remained.

You may also want to take a look at the DOS version fo LEAP (also available on the web site). This includes a module specifically designed for woodfuel planning: something that is not present in the current windows version of LEAP. In all other respects though, the Windows version of LEAP is superior and I cannot generally reccomend using the DOS version.

I hope this helps,

Charlie

Joseph:

Just to let you know, for a number of years there was a very active

project of research, training, and information dissemination on issues

related to wood energy and fuelwood resources in Southeast Asia under

the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. It was called RWEDP, based

in Bangkok, and produced a number of publications that you might find

useful. RWEDP provided training in LEAP (though they used older

versions of LEAP, of course) for use in wood energy scenarios, and some

of its publications may be of use to you. Though RWEDP closed in 2003

or so, its website is still maintained at http://www.rwedp.org/.

Best Regards,
