About SEI


The Stockholm Environment Institute is an independent international research institute. We have been engaged in environment and development issues at local, national, regional and global policy levels for more than a quarter of a century.

SEI was formally established in 1989 by the Swedish Government and celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2009. SEI has established a reputation for rigorous and objective scientific analysis in the field of environment and development.

SEI's goal is to bring about change for sustainable development by bridging science and policy. We do this by providing integrated analysis that supports decision makers.

SEI also develops and support's other software tools including:

  • WEAP for water resource planning,
  • REAP for resources and energy analysis,
  • IPAT-S an open-source modeling language to support sustainability scenario development, and
  • PoleStar for integrated sustainability scenario studies, and

LEAP, WEAP, PoleStar and IPAT-S are developed and supported from SEI's US Center. In the US, SEI is a research affiliate of Tufts University in Massachusetts. Our main US office is on the Tufts campus in Somerville, MA and we also have offices in Davis, California and Seattle, Washington.
